Start at the Beginning

I am getting ready for a three-month trip to Guatemala. To learn Spanish. I feel like I'm ten years old again and it's the day before my first day at the new school - excited and nervous all at once.

To date my excursions outside of the contiguous 48 states requiring the use of a passport consist of approximately 24 hours of driving along the Canadian borders of lakes Superior and Huron, coupled with 8 hours of sleeping in a Toronto youth hostel; and a one week research trip to Bermuda with my biology class in college. That's it.

When I realized that I was going to have a solid four months off from my graduate nursing program, I decided to seize the opportunity and finally get some world travel experience. My goal in the process is to learn Spanish. 1) because I've always wanted to speak another language and 2) so I'll be better able to meet the needs of my community as a health care provider. I also plan on looking into volunteer opportunities on my trip and possibly connecting with some local midwives... we shall see where this adventure takes me.
